Over the next two and a half years it is expected that The American Tree will visit over 5 million people. Each person will be able to reach out and touch the tree, and experience an American phenomenon. “It is a natural reaction to want to reach out and touch the body of this sculpture. And for some, it even brings tears. I can’t explain it, but this inanimate object made up of once living material, seems to draw you into it’s warmth.” Says Janet MacArthur project coordinator for The American Tree.

For Janet, seeing that everything goes according to plan as the project ramps up, is a lot easier said then done. Even with the help of several of The American Tree's sponsors whose in-kind support provides valuable resources, Janet is being kept on her toes. Everything from administration to logistics, to media events and interviews, its all in a days work for this Berkley MBA graduate. “When I was recruited by Hal, I felt shivers run up and down my back as he told me more about the project. I thought that this was the opportunity of a lifetime!”

"The American Tree has reached out to every state capital and been welcomed!" Eric Wilder As well as a co-founder, Eric Wilder is the one responsible for contacting the various organizations and government agencies. Eric explains, “Each states capital through its city hall, chamber of commerce or other amenity or endowment will roster a years worth of public exhibitions and media events. This is done for the benefit and enrichment of the city and its people. The American Tree is in a unique situation where when it tours each state capital it will be enriched by the city and the people who it visits.” He continues, “Even though the bill for the tour is footed by a local organization or the city itself, The American Tree as a Foundation leaves with a newly contributed branch representing that state and many more contributed wooden artifacts and stories.”

Even though the project is just ramping up, The American Tree appears to be in good hands as the team members begin their work. The touring and events schedule is also shaping up as a work in progress.
